Introducing Bookmarked!, a new series from A+P highlighting literary artists of LA. In Bookmarked!, organizations and artists around the city will let us in on books and texts that inspire them. For the first installment, Asha Grant, founder of The Free Black Woman’s Library-LA, will speak with South Los Angeles poet and professor bridgette bianca about her debut book of poetry, be/trouble. Asha and bridgette will be discussing bridgette’s process of writing poetry as well as reading excerpts from bridgette’s recently released collection of poems.

This program will be taking place virtually via RingCentral, powered by Zoom. This means that anyone interested in attending this program from anywhere in the world is welcome, all you need is an internet connection! This program is organized on the occasion of Collective Constellation: Selections from The Eileen Harris Norton Collection on view at Art + Practice through January 2, 2021. Collective Constellation: Selections from The Eileen Harris Norton Collection is presented by Art + Practice in collaboration with the Hammer Museum and organized by their Associate Curator Erin Christovale.

Speakers

Asha Grant (she/hers) is an educator, writer, and researcher who is committed to social justice advocacy work, particularly as it pertains to Black women, femmes, and girls.

Asha received her Bachelors of Arts degree in English with minors in African Diaspora Studies and Comparative Women’s Studies at Spelman College and received her Masters of Arts in English Education with a concentration on Black Female Education and Literacy from Teachers College, Columbia University.

Asha enjoys telling men no and reclaiming her time. She is currently living out Season four of HBO’s “Insecure” in her hometown of Los Angeles as a writer, freelance digital media creative producer, and consultant, and is the director of The Free Black Women’s Library – Los Angeles.

bridgette bianca is a poet and professor from South Central Los Angeles. She received her Bachelor of Arts in English from Howard University and her Master of Fine Arts in Writing from Otis College of Art & Design. bridgette bianca has performed her poetry all around Southern California, including features at The World Stage, the Southern California Poetry Festival, Los Angeles Lit Crawl, the Table Lit, LitFest Pasadena, Rapp Saloon, La Palabra, and the un::fade::able Reading Series.

She was most recently published on CulturalWeekly.com and in Obsidian: Literature & Arts in the African Diaspora. She is one half of the literary curating team, Making Room for Black Women, with Sanura Williams of My Lit Box. bridgette bianca’s work as a writer and an educator seeks to serve the people and moments most forget or ignore. Her first book of poetry, be/trouble, was just released by Writ Large Press in 2020.
